The only active wildfire on Vancouver Island is now out.
Earlier this week, a wildfire was spotted on a small island in the Juan de Fuca Strait, just off of East Sooke Regional Park.
The island is called Secretary Island, and the wildfire that took over the small piece of land was first discovered on Monday, May 5th.
Being that the island was isolated by water with little risk of spreading, the BC Wildfire Service sent just one initial attack crew to manage the fire, who quickly got the blaze under control.
At its largest on Monday, the blaze was only 0.6 hectares and it was kept at that size throughout the process of firefighters battling the flames.
The fire was officially declared to be out as of 3:53 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7th.
The cause of this wildfire is still unknown to the BC Wildfire Service.
As of this publication, there are no fire bans in the coastal region, although there will be soon, and there are currently 40 active wildfires in BC.
With the Secretary Island fire being successfully put out, there are no current wildfires on or around Vancouver Island.
