Community generosity garners over $2M for those impacted by Lapu Lapu festival deaths

Following the weekend’s tragedy in Vancouver which saw 11 festival-goers die and many more injured, an outpouring of support has come for victims of the devastating incident.

On Saturday, April 26th, during a Lapu Lapu Day festival on the streets of Vancouver, on Fraser Street and East 43rd Avenue, a 30-year-old man named Kai-Ji Adam Lo drove his vehicle through the crowd.

He has since been arrested and is in the custody of Vancouver Police.

Since the tragic event, GoFundMe has established a hub for those impacted by the Lapu Lapu Day festival devastation.

In just under a week, people have already donated over $2 million to the causes that have been verified to be connected to the Vancouver tragedy.

There are currently 15 active GoFundMe pages for people and families who have been adversely impacted by the incident.

These verified fundraisers have garnered between $24,400 to over $524,000, with proceeds going either directly to families, or other endeavours that will aid the tragedy’s victims.

One such cause is a GoFundMe that was launched by Chef TJ Conwi, who cooks for six non-profits in Vancouver, providing 1,500 meals per week.

Conwi says he wanted to raise money to be able to expand the number of meals he and his team can provide. He wants to provide meals for anyone impacted in the Filipino community.

Another of the fundraisers is for the sole survivor of a family of four, who were all killed at the event.

The Le family included Richard Le, 47; Linh Hoang, 30; and Katie Le, 5, who were all killed either instantly or later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Andy Le is the sole survivor of this family and only lived because he decided to stay home to finish his homework instead of attending the event with his family.

“Nothing can truly ease the grief and trauma that Andy is currently facing, and the goal of this GoFundMe campaign is to raise funds to cover funeral expenses for Richard, Linh and Katie and provide Andy with financial support for his future college education,” wrote Toan Le, the fundraiser’s organizer.

The official Provincial Day of Remembrance and Mourning for the Victims of the Tragedy at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival will fall on May 2nd, every year.

“On Saturday, April 26, 2025, a joyous festival in celebration of Filipino culture and history ended with a senseless attack that left 11 dead, many injured and many more traumatized. People around the world join us in mourning the lives lost and the awful toll resulting from the act of a single man,” said Premier David Eby.

“On this day of remembrance, people in British Columbia can come together to grieve those we have lost, to offer comfort to those recovering from injuries and to support witnesses whose lives will never be the same after seeing this shocking attack.”

Eby added that he wanted to send his deepest, heartfelt condolences to community members who were impacted.

Those wishing to express their sympathies can do so through an official Province-made online condolence book.
