A dramatic surveillance video has surfaced showing a dramatic single-vehicle crash in Saanich earlier this week — one that could have ended much worse.
The incident happened around 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 6th, in the 3200 block of Richmond Road.
The footage posted online shows a car speeding down the street before losing control, smashing into a telephone pole and a tree.
At one point, the back end of the vehicle launches into the air, sending sparks flying as it slams back down onto the road, eventually coming to rest on all four wheels.
Miraculously, the driver was able to get out of the vehicle on their own and suffered only minor injuries. They were taken to hospital as a precaution.
According to Saanich Police, officers suspected the driver was impaired. When asked to provide a breath sample, the driver refused — leading to their arrest. They’ve since been released with a future court date and are now facing criminal charges related to impaired driving.

In the meantime, they’ve been hit with a 90-day driving ban.
“For the driver to have only received minor injuries in such a significant crash is somewhat of a miracle,” said Sergeant Doug Cripps from the SPD’s Traffic Safety Unit. “They are lucky to be alive and that they didn’t seriously injure or kill someone else.”
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The video, however, speaks volumes about just how serious it could have been.
