Incident on BC Transit bus prompts heavy police presence and shuts down Saanich intersection

Saanich Police have closed the intersection of Ash Road and Tyndall Avenue as they respond to an ongoing incident in the area Wednesday afternoon.

Traffic is being diverted, and police are asking the public to avoid the area until further notice.

A witness near the Shelbourne Street and McKenzie Avenue intersection reported seeing a major police response.

“No less than a dozen police cruisers and unmarked vehicles, plus what looked like a SWAT van, blew through the intersection in the space of a few minutes,” the witness said.

Reports on social media suggest police have a BC Transit bus surrounded.

A spokesperson with BC Transit has confirmed to Victoria Buzz that the ongoing police incident at Tyndall Avenue and Grandview Drive involves one of its buses.

“All passengers and employees have safely departed the bus, and our thoughts are with everyone who experienced this incident,” a spokesperson said.

The company added that it is actively supporting police and emergency responders.  BC Transit also thanked its transit operator, trainer, supervisor, and Saanich Police for their swift actions and assistance during the evolving situation.

Police have not yet provided further details but say an update will be issued once the situation has been resolved.

More to come.
