It was anything but a peaceful stroll through Ruckle Park on Sunday afternoon when an off-leash dog reportedly sparked an altercation that ended with both owners—and their pets—injured.
Salt Spring RCMP say they were called to the park around 4:30 p.m. on April 6th after receiving reports of a weapons complaint.
According to police, a 46-year-old man claimed he and his dog were attacked by another dog that had broken free from its leash.
In an attempt to break up the scuffle, he allegedly pulled out a small knife, which led to injuries on both dogs—and the other dog owner.
That second owner, a 51-year-old Salt Spring man, reportedly rushed over to separate the animals, only to find himself with cuts in the process. The dog was also injured and taken to a vet by friends, while the man was taken to hospital for treatment.
The 46-year-old was arrested in connection to the incident and released pending a court date. His knife was seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
“Both owners and their dogs suffered various, but what appear to be non-life threatening physical injuries,” said Staff Sergeant Kris Clark with BC RCMP.
Police are still piecing together exactly what happened and haven’t ruled out charges.
