A report has been filed with the BC Prosecution Service by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC following a collision between a cyclist and a Central Saanich police officer in May.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on May 21st, 2024, when a man was riding his bicycle along the 7100-block of Wallace Drive in Central Saanich.
Shortly after, a marked police vehicle, driven by a member of the Central Saanich Police Service, collided with the cyclist.
The officer immediately stopped and alerted emergency health services, reads the report.
The IIO was notified about the collision on the same day and began its investigation.
Although the man sustained injuries, they were not severe enough to meet the threshold for serious harm. Nonetheless, due to the nature of the incident, the Director of Police Services called for an IIO investigation as per protocol.

After reviewing the case, IIO Chief Civilian Director Jessica Berglund concluded that there were reasonable grounds to believe the officer may have violated the Motor Vehicle Act in relation to the use of their vehicle.
As a result, the IIO has forwarded the report to the BC Prosecution Service to determine whether charges are warranted.
The BC Prosecution Service will now decide whether there is enough evidence to proceed with charges and whether prosecution is in the public interest. Until then, the IIO has stated that no further comments will be made regarding the case.
The IIO serves as the independent civilian oversight body responsible for investigating incidents involving police officers that result in serious harm or death, regardless of any allegations of misconduct.
