The Canadian government has just rolled out a new service guarantee that promises to process your passport application within 30 business days, or you’ll get your money back.
Minister of Citizens’ Services Terry Beech made the announcement today, alongside the release of the first-ever “State of Service” report.
The government’s new passport service guarantee aims to take the stress out of planning international trips, ensuring that Canadians no longer have to worry about delays when applying for their travel documents.
Starting later this year, all passport applications—whether submitted online, in person, or by mail—will be processed in 30 business days.
If the government misses that mark, applicants will be refunded the full cost of their passport application.
But that’s not all.
The government is also rolling out some updates to make passport services even more accessible. For example, eligible Canadians can now renew their passports online from the comfort of their own homes—no more long waits at Service Canada Centres.
On top of that, the government has expanded its 10-business day passport service to 24 Service Canada locations, including Iqaluit and Yellowknife—a brand new passport processing and print centre will also soon open in Surrey.
So whether you’re in a remote northern town or the heart of Vancouver, getting your passport should be easier than ever.
This announcement is part of ongoing efforts of the Canadian government to modernize services. Over 833,000 Canadians have used the online Passport Status Checker to track their applications, and passport issuance has surged by 315% since 2021, with over 5.4 million passports expected in 2025.
The government is also working to make other services more efficient. For instance, the Employment Insurance (EI) call centre has seen wait times drop dramatically from 18 minutes in 2022 to just 4 minutes today. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is now serving over 1.5 million Canadians, and soon seniors, children, and people with disabilities will have even easier access to dental care.
All these changes are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve service delivery and make it easier for Canadians to get the support they need, when they need it.
So if you’re thinking of applying for a passport, rest easy knowing that you can expect top-notch service—quick and guaranteed. And if the government doesn’t meet the 30-day deadline?
