Saanich Police have revealed that in all of 2024, officers stopped 628 impaired drivers, setting a department record.
This number surpassed their previous record of 468 impaired drivers stopped, which was set in 2023.
The following is a list of all the penalties administered by Saanich Police to drivers last year:
- 110 lost their license for 24 hours related to alcohol
- 43 lost their license for 24 hours related to drugs
- 178 lost their license for three days
- 11 lost their license for seven days
- Two lost their license for 30 days
- 278 lost their license for 90 days
“While I recognize and commend our officers for their commitment, hard work, and dedication to ensure that Saanich Streets are safe, setting records for impaired drivers caught in back-to- back years is very concerning,” said Chief Constable Dean Duthie.
“Impaired driving is selfish and endangers everyone in our community – there are many safe options available for people such as public transit, ridesharing, and identifying a designated driver. It just requires some planning and responsibility.”
Saanich Police added that 469 of the impaired drivers stopped had their vehicle impounded for between three and 30 days.
