The province is taking action to deal with ongoing traffic problems where Highway 4 passes through the heavily visited Cathedral Grove on the way to Port Alberni.
In a media statement from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, safety improvements will be made along Highway 4 through MacMillan Provincial Park, with the installation of concrete roadside barriers.
The work is scheduled for two nights—Sunday, January 26th and Monday, January 27th—from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
During the installation, single-lane-alternating traffic will be in effect, and drivers can expect minor delays as over 650 feet of concrete barriers are placed on both sides of the highway shoulder.
These barriers will be installed in the existing no parking areas near Cathedral Grove. The project aims to address safety concerns stemming from vehicles being illegally parked along the highway, which poses risks to both drivers and pedestrians, particularly during heavy tourist seasons.
The new barriers are expected to help mitigate ongoing safety challenges by keeping vehicles within designated parking areas, ensuring safer conditions for pedestrians and motorists alike.
Motorists travelling through the area overnight should plan for extra time to accommodate potential delays. Traffic signs and construction personnel will be present to help guide drivers safely through the work zone.
Drivers are encouraged to drive with caution in the active construction area. Over-width vehicles with proper permits and advance notice will still be able to pass through the construction zone.
