Search and rescue crews were helicoptered onto a steep skiing slope on Vancouver Island after a 35-year-old skier was found seriously injured.

The skier is lucky to be alive after a serious fall in the West Bowl area of Mount Cain left them unconscious on a steep slope.

The accident happened outside the ski area boundaries, but the Mount Cain ski patrol jumped into action right away. They stabilized the skier as best they could and prepared the area for helicopters to land.

A doctor who happened to be on-site also provided immediate medical assistance to stabilize the skier.

The rescue, led by Comox Valley Search & Rescue (CVSAR) who were flown in by 49 North Helicopters, involved a complex Class D Fixed Line (CDFL) procedure, showcasing seamless collaboration among multiple agencies.

The team worked with the ski patrol to fully stabilize the skier and transport them using a specialized aerial rescue platform. They were flown to the Mount Cain parking area, where BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) took over care.

“This mission demonstrated the incredible collaboration between Mount Cain patrol, BCEHS, 49 North Helicopters, and Ascent Helicopters,” said CVSAR. “The skill, speed, and teamwork of everyone involved were crucial in making this challenging rescue a success.”

Mount Cain’s backcountry terrain is known for its rugged beauty, but incidents like this highlight the importance of safety and preparedness when venturing beyond ski boundaries.

The skier’s current condition is unknown.
