A 42-year-old man from Nelson, BC, was found deceased near a campsite south of Port Alberni after his SOS device signalled for help early Tuesday morning.
At 12:53 a.m. on December 10th, Port Alberni RCMP received an alert from a Global Star SOS device near Franklin River Road. The device was linked to the man, whose last known location was the remote area.
RCMP officers, with assistance from the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad (SAR), began searching the rugged terrain near Museum Main and Thomas Main roads. At around 8 a.m., SAR teams located the man’s body a short distance from a campsite.
The campsite showed signs of recent activity, including felled trees and a small structure. The man’s vehicle was also found nearby.
Due to the challenging terrain, the deceased had to be airlifted by helicopter. Police and officials from the BC Coroners Service conducted a preliminary examination of the scene and the man’s body. No evidence of foul play was found, and the death is not considered suspicious.
The man’s family has been notified.
