If you were planning on sailing with BC Ferries today, you may have to wait.

Due to a severe weather system forecasted by Environment Canada, BC Ferries has cancelled several sailings between Tsawwassen (Vancouver) and Swartz Bay (Victoria) for today, Tuesday, November 12th.

The cancellations are in response to high winds expected to impact the Strait of Georgia, and the affected sailings are as follows:

  • 7 p.m. departing Swartz Bay
  • 7 p.m. departing Tsawwassen
  • 9 p.m. departing Swartz Bay
  • 9 p.m. departing Tsawwassen

The final scheduled sailings for today will be the 5 p.m. departures from both Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.

Two sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay are also cancelled, the 8:45 p.m. leaving Departure Bay and 10:10 p.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay.

In the event of a cancellation, BC Ferries will refund fares and fees.

BC Ferries said they are closely monitoring the situation and advises travellers to check the BC Ferries  website for more information and travel advisory updates.

The weather warning issued by Environment Canada includes the Greater Victoria area, as well as the Southern Gulf Islands, east Vancouver Island, and the Sunshine Coast.

The storm, which is expected to begin Tuesday evening and continue into Wednesday morning, will bring winds of 70 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 100 km/h.

These high winds could cause widespread damage, including power outages, fallen trees, and travel delays.

Stay safe and secure any loose outdoor items that could become dangerous in high winds.
