The body of a resident has now been recovered from the site of a house fire which took place in Nanaimo yesterday.
In the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 20th, reports came into the Nanaimo Fire Department and RCMP about a house fire located in a southern area of the city, at 1019 Old Victoria Road.
Witnesses at the scene of the blaze told investigators they saw the resident re-enter the home after it had gone up in flames, but fire crews were unable to enter the home because it was still engulfed at that time.
Once it was safe to enter the home, at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, crews recovered the body of the resident who was seen going back inside.
“At this time based on evidence gathered by fire and police investigators, there is nothing considered suspicious about the fire,” wrote Nanaimo RCMP in a media release.
“The scene is still being secured but only for insurance purposes as it is considered an insecure premise.”
The age and identity of the victim was not released.
Nanaimo RCMP will continue their investigation in collaboration with the BC Coroners Service.
