Heavy rains continue to batter much of Vancouver Island through the weekend

Road conditions across Vancouver Island are becoming increasingly hazardous as heavy rain continues to drench the region.

The areas most affected include west and inland Vancouver Island, with towns like Tofino, Ucluelet, Port Alberni, Bamfield, Port Renfrew, Lake Cowichan, Gold River, Zeballos, and Tahsis experiencing the brunt of the storm.

A 35-kilometre stretch of Highway 14 between Port Renfrew and Jordan River was closed Saturday morning due to a washout, according to DriveBC.

Highway 4 near Kennedy Lake was closed Friday evening due to water and rocks on the road. DriveBC issued a warning around 5:30 p.m., with the road reopening by 11 p.m.

A rainfall warning remains in effect until Sunday, with up to 150 mm expected in coastal areas and over 250 mm in higher elevations. Inland regions may see totals between 80 and 120 mm.

This fall storm system is funnelling an atmospheric river towards the south coast and Vancouver Island, causing significant rainfall and hazardous conditions.

Water pooling on roads, swollen rivers and creeks, and minor coastal flooding have been reported across the island.

Northern areas are expected to see some relief from the rain by this afternoon, while Port Renfrew and Lake Cowichan may experience a brief break later tonight. However, the storm isn’t over yet, as another surge of rain is anticipated to hit all regions Sunday morning, with conditions finally easing by midday.

Residents are urged to take precautions, ensuring that drains are cleared of leaves and debris to prevent flooding, and securing any loose objects that could be swept away by the storm.

Authorities are also advising caution on the roads, as heavy downpours can reduce visibility, lead to flash floods, and cause water pooling.

Drivers are encouraged to turn on their headlights when visibility is reduced and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts should be avoided.

The anticipated rain has led the River Forecast Centre to issue flood watches for Vancouver Island, rivers along the central and south coasts, Lower Fraser tributaries, and Metro Vancouver waterways.

Despite the inclement weather, many residents are still heading to the polls to cast their votes in the BC elections.
