We’ve all got that friend who loves to talk to birds.
An owl’s “hoot hoot,” the “HEY-sweetie” of a black-capped chickadee or the familiar “caw” of the northwestern crow.
But have you ever heard someone imitate a seagull?
In honour of World Migratory Bird Day this Saturday, the Rocky Point Bird Observatory will be hosting a number of events around the city.
Perhaps the most interesting of which is the scream like a gull contest.
This contest, taking place in Beacon Hill Park, may ruffle some feathers of passers-by.
Participants of all ages will step up to the mic to deliver their boldest, loudest and most unhinged gull calls. Organizers say costumes are encouraged.
Judges will be listening for volume, accuracy, creativity and showmanship. Judges will include last year’s winner Johnny Novak of Virgin Radio’s morning show.
Before the contest begins, everyone is invited to join a crowd gull-off warm-up, where the audience will practice their best gull scream together to call contestants to the stage.
This will be the second time this contest is happening, and it seems to be making some commotion around the city.
Other events over the weekend include a conservation beer launch in collaboration with île Sauvage Brewing, a bird-themed flash tattoo event with Famiglia Tattoo and several bird walks all around the city.

Whether you’ve been practicing your calls or just want to wing it, head down to Beacon Hill park on Saturday for what’s sure to be an interesting time.
