The wildfire that caused Sooke Potholes Regional Park to be shut down indefinitely has now been updated to ‘under control’ by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).
This fire, thought to be human caused, was discovered on July 22nd, and quickly grew to 230 hectares in size.
According to the BCWS, the difficult terrain around the Old Man Lake blaze brought challenges for ground crews to fight the flames.
On July 30th, the wildfire was updated to ‘being held’ status, meaning it was expected to remain within its perimeter.
As of this publication, it has been deemed as under control by BCWS—meaning it is no longer projected to grow.

However, this does not mean that the Sooke Potholes Regional Park, the section of Galloping Goose Regional Trail that traverses the park or the Spring Salmon Place (KWL-UCHUN) Campground will be reopening anytime soon.
Victoria Buzz Reached out to the District of Sooke for comment on when these areas will be reopening.
A District spokesperson said that there will be news on the park’s reopening in the coming days.
Currently, site assessments are being conducted to determine when it might be opened again.
