A recent analysis detailing which Canadian cities are the best to rent in was released and found that Victoria is number one in terms of ‘community’.
This was just one aspect of the analysis by Point2Homes, which looked at three categories to determine the best Canadian city to rent in: economy and housing, quality of life and community.
After the consideration of certain criteria, Victoria won number one in the ‘community’ category.
The criteria consisted of the share of people with post-secondary education, sense of belonging, as well as the frequency of spectator sports, hospitals, museums, restaurants, schools, rec centres, grocery stores and convenience retailers per 10,000 people.
When looking at the other categories of this analysis; however, Victoria did not fare so well.
In terms of economy and housing, Victoria ranked 68th and BC’s capital came in 51st in terms of quality of life.
These categories looked at data such as air quality, stress, commute times, greenness, rental rates, unemployment and share of renters who spend less than 30% of their income on shelter costs.
Overall, the analysis found that Victoria placed 11th best place to rent in when aggregating data from all three categories.
Victoria wasn’t the only Vancouver Island community that was analyzed by Ponit2Homes. Also showing up on this list was both Saanich and Nanaimo.
Saanich scored:
- 81st overall
- 81st in terms of economy and housing
- 20th in terms of quality of life
- 76th in terms of community
Nanaimo scored:
- 73rd overall
- 78th in terms of economy and housing
- 65th in terms of quality of life
- 48th in terms of community.
In the end, it was determined that the top ten overall cities to rent in, based on Point2Homes’ criteria, were all based in the Maritime Provinces or in Quebec.
The top three were Saint John’s, NL; Sherbrooke, QC; and Quebec City, QC.
