New outdoor pickleball court to open at Saanich’s Uptown Shopping Centre in July

Like Taylor Swift, the popularity of pickleball continues to grow, and Victoria is no exception to that.

Following the opening of an indoor pickleball court at Crystal Gardens and the brand new facility in the West Shore area, Uptown Shopping Centre announced they are joining the movement with their very own court as well.

In an Instagram post, Uptown revealed they are opening “The Courts,” an outdoor pickleball court expected to open in July.

“We are incredibly excited to announce Uptown is opening pickleball courts this Summer. Look for more details and booking information coming soon,” read the social media post.

Details on the new courts are limited; however, construction of the outdoor facility has already begun on the vacant land at the corner of Carey and Ravine Roads—where a condo project was approved years ago.

The shopping centre has erected banners along the fence at the corner to promote the new courts’ opening.

While pickleball is gaining popularity in town, North Saanich council recently encountered opposition when presented with a petition signed by 400 residents opposing the installation of a court at Cy Hampson Park, a park heavily frequented by dog owners.

The petition raised concerns about the noise generated by pickleball, specifically in the proposed location of Cy Hampson Park, which was under consideration for outdoor court installation to meet the sport’s growing demand.

Instead of proceeding with plans for new courts at the park, council opted to maintain the existing courts at nearby Wain Park. This decision comes with a caveat for pickleball players: they must use softer balls, which produce less noise.

This requirement has been met with objections from pickleball enthusiasts.
