At the end of November, Lucky Bar will be hosting a brand new country act who are releasing their first EP along with a beloved local singer-songwriter who is releasing a brand new live record.
The double release show will feature the sounds of Pony Gold and Northcote, who represent the best of what Victoria has to offer in the country and folk genres respectively.
Recently featured as The Zone @ 91-3’s Band of the Month, Pony Gold is one of Victoria’s newest, best and brightest bands on the scene.
Pony Gold
They are a husband and wife duo who each offer their hearts up to fans through their music, lyrics, melodies and musicianship.
Both Theresa and Matt Bromley played in a handful of other bands throughout Victoria and have called this city their home ever since they came here for their post-secondary education.
Pony Gold is a rebranding and a way for the two of them to apply their love of music to a shared vision.
“We’d been playing under my solo name for quite a while,” Theresa told Victoria Buzz..
“So I kind of wanted to start something and brand it as not just me as a solo artist with a guitar player accompanying me, that it was focused on us as a duo.”
Through the pandemic, Theresa says she had trouble giving any part of herself to making music, she said she had hardly picked up her guitar and may have only written one song over the course of two years.
“I went back to school and I think I just got burnt out from music,” Theresa explained.
Despite this burnout, she was able to find a new found inspiration through quitting drinking and getting through her educational endeavours.
“In 2021, in the winter I actually quit drinking and that’s when I really started playing guitar again and writing music again,” she reminisced. “I used that as kind of a coping mechanism.”
Following the two year-long hurdle that was the pandemic and facing sobriety, Pony Gold got booked for their first big gig, Sunfest.
Theresa says she had to essentially re-learn how to sing and play guitar for this huge opportunity but in the end her hard work paid off and they walked away from that show proud of their performance.
Then, almost immediately after that show, Theresa and Matt Bromley were married and promptly used their honeymoon fund to record some of their music.
“We didn’t really know what we wanted to do,” Theresa explained.
“We used that time as a bit of a fun experience for our honeymoon but it was also a huge learning process, figuring out what direction we want to go.”
The EP that resulted from their sessions at Rock Bay’s Catalogue Studios is Take Me Somewhere.
The five songs on the record are a culmination of their favourite songs they have so far, each offering something totally different but all in the veins of americana, country and blues.
The title track, Take Me Somewhere, Theresa says is about her Opa, who recently passed away from dementia, leaving her the Gretsch acoustic guitar she recorded the EP with.
“I kind of wanted to dedicate the album to him in a way,” Theresa told Victoria Buzz.
“To me it gives the feeling of, he’s gone, and maybe some things that he wanted to do and places that he wanted to go he wasn’t able to.”
“With the song Take Me Somewhere, and the album, I feel like we can take him some of the places he didn’t get to go,” she shared.
Northcote
The other musician releasing a record at the end of this month is the incomparable Northcote.
“Lots of people love his music, like most people that I talk to are like, ‘I’ve known his music for so long and I love him,’ so I’m excited,” Theresa told Victoria Buzz.
Northcote has been an active musician in Victoria and across the world for over 15 years, finding success in Europe along with fellow punks-turned-folk Chuck Ragan, Frank Turner and Austin Lucas who were all a part of the ‘Till the Wheels Fall Off’ tours.
The man behind the songs is Matt Goud, and he is the heart and soul of Northcote, although he does have some of the finest players join him from time to time to fully flesh out his sound.
This show will mark Northcote’s last hometown show for the foreseeable future as he plans on embarking on a full European tour alongside Chris Cresswell of the Flatliners beginning in March.
His last release before this upcoming live record was entitled Wholeheart, in which he explored the singer-songwriter further while also being influenced by his recent influence of Indian devotional and chanting music.
Another local up-and-comer, Talal McBriar is going to be opening the show and she has thoroughly been carving out a name for herself over the last few years in Victoria as someone to see.
The dual release show is scheduled for November 30th at Lucky Bar.
