Dallas Road redesign proposed by community group

Share

If the Greater Victoria Placemaking Network (GVPN) gets their way, Dallas Road might soon go from a scenic drive to a scenic multi-use pathway.

The community group has set its sights on a redesign of the road and accompanying waterfront green space near Beacon Hill Park.

Rather than vehicles, the proposed plan would give priority to pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters.

“Essentially what we’ve done in the past, as a society, is [paved] paradise and put up a parking lot,” Lorne Daniel, the vice-president of the GVPN, told CBC News.

A Shift In Priorities

The redesign would create narrower and slower lanes for cars, making room for a protected bike lane and a path for pedestrians and mobility scooters.

Daniel also suggested that the current roadway acts as a barrier to park users, who have to cross an “intimidating roadway”.

Though the redesign idea is still in its conceptual stages, Victoria City Councillor Jeremy Loveday said the GVPN’s proposal marks a good place to start the conversation.

He also told CBC News that he has already introduced a motion in council, asking staff to begin consulting the community about potential Dallas Road improvements.
