Victoria golfers qualify for national tournament in October

Some Victoria golfers are heading to a national event after seeing success at a BC tournament this week.

Local PGA golf pro Lucas Nonni, along with amateurs Amir Majeed, John Kennedy, Colleen McCrann and Terry Weegar are going to get the chance to compete for a Canadian National Championship in October.

The team will be heading to the PGA Scramble National Final after taking the win at the BC West Regional Final earlier this week at the GreenTee Country Club Westwood Plateau Sky.

The Scramble final will be held at the prestigious Cabot Links Golf Course in Inverness, Nova Scotia, which was recently voted the sixth best course in the country by Top100golfcourses.com.

The scramble format gives a unique dimension to the tournaments.

The team-focused format considers the handicap of each golfer when calculating their final score, giving anyone who has a Golf Canada handicap the chance to participate and win.

“It was truly a total team effort,” the group said in a release to the media.

“Everyone contributed at different times, and that’s what made the difference. The putters got hot for everyone at different points throughout the round, and when one person cooled off, someone else seemed to step up and make a big putt.”

The team qualified for the BC West regional tournament by winning a local qualifier at Bear Mountain Resort earlier in the summer.

Now that they’ve qualified, the team will compete against teams from across the country in the National Final in Inverness in October.

While they’ve performed well so far, the team says they’re looking forward to what comes next.

“We’re excited to represent the club at Cabot and looking forward to the next stage,” they said.

There are 28 other teams from BC going to the event, and a total of 193 teams have currently qualified through local qualifiers.
