As hot and dry conditions return to Vancouver Island, the season’s wildfire activity is beginning to ramp up.
The BC Wildfire Service is responding to a new wildfire burning on Mount Prevost, a popular recreation area southwest of Duncan.
The blaze, designated fire number V60767, was discovered on Monday, July 6th, and is estimated to be approximately one hectare in size.
As of 3:24 p.m., the wildfire is classified as out of control, meaning it is spreading or is expected to spread beyond its current perimeter or established control lines.
The BC Wildfire Service suspects the fire was human caused.
At this time, there are no evacuation orders or alerts associated with the wildfire, and no area restrictions have been issued.
The BC Wildfire Service says evacuation information will be posted if it becomes available through local governments or First Nations.
Fire crews are responding, and the situation remains active.
With warmer temperatures and dry conditions expected to continue, officials are reminding the public to use extra caution outdoors and to help prevent human-caused wildfires.
Residents can monitor the latest wildfire information through the BC Wildfire Service as crews continue to respond to the incident.
As of this publication, there are 21 active wildfires across the province.
