Man behind Greater Victoria dating scam now wanted for breaching court conditions

A man once described by a judge as the “poster child for online dating scams” is now being sought by police after allegedly breaching court-ordered conditions.

Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers says Brodie Brooks is currently wanted, and is being urged to turn himself in to Saanich Police.

Brooks pleaded guilty in January 2025 to defrauding 14 people, largely women, across Greater Victoria and Duncan between September 2019 and December 2023.

At the time, the judge overseeing the case said it was difficult to hear the details of the case.

Brooks was handed a conditional sentence of two years less a day to be served in the community under house arrest, followed by two years of probation. The court agreed to the sentence in part so he could continue working and repay victims.

He was also ordered to pay back more than $89,000, starting with an immediate $6,000 payment and followed by monthly instalments of at least $2,000.

The case stems from a years-long investigation launched by Saanich Police in 2019 after multiple victims reported being defrauded through online dating platforms.

Police said Brooks would build relationships with victims online before asking for money under false pretences, often promising to repay it. Once victims sought repayment, communication would typically end.

At the time of his earlier arrest, Brooks faced multiple charges including fraud over $5,000, false pretences and impersonating a peace officer.

Police say he was released under strict conditions, including a ban on using online dating platforms and entering into private loan agreements.

Details about the alleged breach have not been released.

Anyone with information on Brooks’ whereabouts is asked to contact Saanich Police. Those wishing to remain anonymous can reach out to Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online.

Police are again reminding the public to use caution when forming relationships online and to never send money to someone they have only communicated with digitally.
