Residents invited to provide feedback on Sidney borrowing $14.2M for new rec centre

The Town of Sidney is inviting community members to provide their opinions on whether or not a new recreation centre should be built in the Saanichton area.

Sidney is trying to understand the needs of residents before they authorize a Capital Regional District (CRD) loan for the Peninsula Recreation Commission of up to $14.2 million in capital funding for the project.

If approved, a new indoor recreation facility will be built on the peninsula that would serve Sidney, North Saanich and Central Saanich.

Ultimately, all three municipalities would shoulder the burden of the loan, and pay into the new recreation centre, much as they do with Panorama Recreation Centre and the Multi Sport Box in Central Saanich.

Because the borrowing costs would be shared, all three municipalities must approve the borrowing.

According to Sidney, the proposed 10,000 square-foot facility would provide services such as a weight room, a fitness/dance studio, a pottery/ceramics studio and would have plenty of multi-purpose space for programs and community gatherings.

This proposed facility would be located on Hovey Road across from Centennial Park in Saanichton, and would also be home to Central Saanich’s new police station, fire station and municipal hall.

The total budget for Central Saanich’s new municipal facility is $62.6 million, and $14.2 million is required in capital spending to meet building and design costs for the recreation centre specifically.

Community members can leave feedback with the Town of Sidney up until 4 p.m. on Monday, May 11th.

The matter will then be handed back to council and will be considered at the regular council meeting later on May 11th.

Now, if only the Central Saanich Parks Dept as well as North Saanich council would only support all the hundreds of people trying to find a place to play pickleball.
