BC Transit has introduced a new policy aimed at reducing bus pass-ups.
The policy was first introduced in Victoria over the last few months and involves the bus driver changing the display on the front of the vehicle to read “Standing Room Only.”
When seating capacity has been exceeded, the driver will implement this message in hopes that it reduces frustration among riders.
After the successful implementation in Victoria, BC Transit will begin introducing this new policy throughout the rest of the communities the organization serves.
According to BC Transit, this policy change in Victoria led to a reduction of more than 55% in customer pass-up experiences between September through December in 2025.
“BC Transit works hard to deliver transportation services customers can rely on, and the organization knows through ongoing customer feedback that getting passed up by a bus is a source of frustration,” reads a media release from BC Transit.”
“Transit Operators will stop and open their doors at each stop on their designated route to permit additional customers to board if they choose.”
Once there is only standing room available on a bus, riders will be welcome to board until they are no longer able to remain behind the red line near the front of the vehicle.
BC Transit recognizes that while this will hopefully reduce rider pass-ups, it will also mean less physical space for riders without seats.
Those who use BC Transit are asked to remain patient and courteous to one another.
Further, riders who are standing are asked to continue moving towards the back of the bus to make room for additional people, and those who do get a seat are asked to continue to volunteer their seats for seniors and people with mobility challenges.
