Victoria closes beachfronts as strong winds and risk of flooding hit region

Share

The City of Victoria has temporarily closed several popular beachfront areas as powerful winds batter the region and the risk of coastal flooding rises.

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for Greater Victoria, forecasting gusts of up to 90 km/h Thursday afternoon.

The intense winds, combined with high ocean water levels and waves, are expected to create dangerous conditions along the shoreline.

As a precaution, the City has closed the following waterfront areas:

  • Ross Bay Seawall from Memorial Crescent to Clover Point
  • Little Ross Bay beach access
  • Gonzales Beach access
  • Lower walkway at Holland Point Park

City officials are urging residents to avoid coastal areas until conditions improve, warning that waves and high tides could lead to temporary flooding or debris washing ashore.

Residents are also encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages. The City recommends charging phones, having flashlights and blankets ready, and staying away from trees or hydro wires during the storm.

Those who spot downed power lines should call 911, while power outages can be reported to BC Hydro at 1-800-224-9376.

Fallen trees or branches can be reported to the City’s Parks Department at 250-361-0600 (or 250-361-0400 after hours).

Environment Canada says winds should ease later in the evening, but advises ongoing caution near the water.
