A serious police incident in Saanich on Wednesday afternoon has been safely resolved, according to an update from police.
On April 9th, just before 12:30 p.m., police were notified that a person aboard a BC Transit bus was in mental distress, in possession of weapons, and actively harming themselves.
Police responded to the scene near the intersection of Ash Road and Tyndall Avenue, quickly closing the area to traffic to ensure the safety of the public and the individual involved.
Witnesses described a significant police presence moving through the Shelbourne Street and McKenzie Avenue area, with multiple cruisers, unmarked vehicles, and a vehicle resembling a SWAT van en route to the scene.
Members of the Saanich Police Department, along with the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team and crisis negotiators, were able to establish communication with the person on board.
Police said through de-escalation efforts, officers successfully negotiated a peaceful surrender.
The individual was taken into custody under the mental health act and transported to hospital for care.
Police thanked the public for their patience during the disruption and emphasized the importance of seeking help during times of crisis.
“All passengers and employees have safely departed the bus, and our thoughts are with everyone who experienced this incident,” a BC Transit spokesperson said.
