A fire broke out at a condo unit near Tillicum Mall in Saanich on Sunday, December 29th, leaving one person dead and displacing multiple residents.
The blaze ignited just before 6 p.m. in a condo unit located in the 3100-block of Tillicum Road. Flames were seen shooting from the top floor of the building as nearly two dozen firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control.
It took crews approximately two hours to contain the blaze.
While the fire was confined to the unit where it originated, significant water damage throughout the building has forced all residents to leave their homes.
The total number of displaced occupants remains unknown.
Tragically, the fire claimed the life of one individual. Witnesses told Victoria Buzz that the victim was a senior who lived in the affected unit.
The person was initially transported to hospital with serious injuries but later succumbed to those injuries. The BC Coroners Service confirmed the fatality but has not released additional details.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
