Two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle after the driver mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake in Sidney on Wednesday afternoon.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP confirmed that multiple people were injured and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. However, they did not elaborate on the number of injured individuals or provide details about the driver.

While details are limited, witnesses told Victoria Buzz that at least two pedestrians were struck around 2:30 p.m. when an elderly driver crashed into the BC Liquor Store at Beacon Plaza in the 2300 block of Beacon Avenue.

“Police are actively investigating the cause of the crash but have determined that alcohol was not a factor in the incident. Our officers are working hard to determine the cause of the motor vehicle incident and would like to thank all those who assisted,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, a BC RCMP spokesperson.

We have reached out to both the RCMP and BC Ambulance Service for more information about the pedestrians and the driver.

The scene has been cleared; however, a portion of the building where the vehicle crashed remains taped off. The crash caused significant damage to both the vehicle and the building.

“BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 2:28 p.m. today about a motor vehicle incident involving pedestrians in the 2300 block of Beacon Avenue in Sidney,” said Public Information Officer Rachelle Bown.

“Two ambulances with primary care paramedics, an ambulance with advanced care paramedics, an advanced care paramedic responder and a supervisor responded to the scene. Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to three patients who were transported to hospital.”

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP are asking anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to an investigator, or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident, to contact them at 250-656-3931.
