One man is in custody after being identified through surveillance footage while in the act of slashing tires on nearly two dozen vehicles.

On Monday, November 11th, Nanaimo RCMP responded to reports of numerous tire slashing incidents in the downtown area.

Police arrived at a parking lot in the 200 block of Franklyn Street to find that tires on 20 vehicles had been slashed overnight. Shortly afterward, three additional vehicles with slashed tires were located nearby in the 300 block of Selby Street.

Surveillance footage from the Franklyn Street parking lot captured a male suspect parking a vehicle, exiting, and walking from car to car while slashing tires before driving away in the early morning hours.

Shortly after reviewing the footage, an officer identified a car matching the suspect vehicle parked near the crime scene. Routine inquiries allowed police to confirm the registered owner’s address, leading officers to the suspect’s residence.

The registered owner, identified as the man seen in the surveillance video, was arrested without incident.

He was released from police custody pending a future court date. Police have stated that criminal charges are forthcoming, and the investigation remains active.

Nanaimo RCMP are asking anyone with video, dashcam, or home surveillance footage from the 200 block of Franklyn Street between midnight and 1 a.m. on November 11th to contact them at 250-754-2345.
