UPDATE: The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has launched an investigation into a fatal motor vehicle incident that occurred in the early morning hours in downtown Victoria. Read more here.

A portion of Douglas Street in downtown Victoria is closed this Saturday morning due to a police investigation.

In a social media post, VicPD confirmed that the section between Belleville and Courtney Streets is closed in both directions.

In an email statement to Victoria Buzz, VicPD said officers responded to an incident around 1 a.m., and the investigation is ongoing, according to an email statement provided to Victoria Buzz.

Douglas Street is expected to remain closed for an extended period.

Photos from the scene show a Victoria taxi under an investigation tent, with visible damage to the front of the vehicle.

A BC Transit bus also appears to be involved in the investigation, with a truck having collided with the driver’s side of the bus. We have reached out to BC Transit for comment.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirmed they are investigating the incident. They confirmed more details will be released later today.

The IIO is responsible for investigating incidents where police actions may have led to death or serious harm, with the goal of ensuring transparency and accountability in law enforcement.
