Upgrades are coming to major Salt Spring Island road to bring travel ease

There are upgrades coming to Salt Spring Island roads to make traveling smoother for visitors and residents alike!

Starting this summer, improvements to the Fulford-Ganges Road are expected to take form, and will improve sight lines and access for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

There will be new pavement, new markings, crosswalks, speed-reader boards and refuge areas to enhance safety.

Installing these improvements will include pulverizing and rebuilding the road base, resurfacing and grading to introduce new, paved shoulders on both sides of the Fulford-Ganges Road.

Additionally, the enhancement project includes an upgraded underground storm-sewage drainage system to support long-term environmental viability.

A culvert will also be installed at Cranberry Road to reduce the risk of flood and road damage.

This project will cost approximately $22.9 million and is being funded through the BC’s Climate Adaptation and Preservation program.

Construction will start after Labour Day weekend in September and is slated to be completed in summer 2025.

Once construction has begun, single-late-alternating traffic will be in effect. People traveling along the Fulford-Ganges Road should anticipate delays up to 20 minutes, so it’s best to plan ahead and/or avoid peak travel times.

The speed limit will be reduced from 50 km/hr to 30 km/hr throughout the duration of construction.
