A project full of creativity and innovation that promotes curiosity in a unique way!
Vancouver Island Astronomer David Allen Gibney has been working on the world’s largest mobile binocular observatory for nearly two decades, and has launched a GoFundMe to help with the last leg of his project.
For 18 years, Gibney has gathered all of the necessary parts and has invested over $400,000 into his vision.
Everything is now ready to be assembled, but he needs the community’s help to complete the project!
According to his fundraiser page, when he ordered the steel telescope mount and observer chair from a welder in Nanaimo, he had the resources to pay for it in full.
“Unfortunately the welder took a lot longer than expected,” he wrote.
“I do not have the $4500 to pay for the work done now, and the welder will not deliver until the invoice is paid in full.”
Gibney is hoping to raise $5000 to cover the welding bill and have some operating capital to start with.
He’s hoping that with the community’s help, he can use these donations to have the prototype operational as soon as possible.
As of this publication, his page has raised nearly $1,400 and has garnered many words of support and encouragement.

“This is a great cause. Projects like this nurture curiosity and exploration,” another said.
Others are very enthusiastic about the final product and can’t wait to see it in action! And because it’s mobile, he’s hoping to share this with as many people as possible, including schools.
