Nanaimo RCMP issue waning after resident loses $4K in rental scam

Nanaimo RCMP are urging residents to exercise caution when searching for rental accommodations following a recent rental scam.

Police say a local resident reported losing nearly $4,000 in the alleged rental scam.

According to investigators, the victim responded to an online advertisement for a housing rental in Nanaimo that appeared legitimate and included documents such as a rental agreement and land title information.

The victim reportedly sent several payments for deposits and rent through online banking, believing the rental was legitimate.

However, when the victim arranged to view the property, they learned from the actual landowner that the individuals advertising their property had no authority to do so.

The victim then reported the fraud to police.

Investigators say they have since learned that information about that same property has been used in past rental scam attempts.

“Finding affordable housing can be stressful, and scammers often take advantage of people who feel pressured to secure a place to live quickly,” said Inspector Donovan Tait, operations officer of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Taking a few extra steps to verify a rental listing and the identity of the landlord can help prevent a significant financial loss.”

Nanaimo RCMP have provided the following tips to keep in mind when pursuing a rental online:

  • Never send a deposit or rent payment before viewing a property in person
  • Be cautious if rent is markedly below market value or if there is pressure to act quickly
  • Be wary of landlords who claim to be out of town or unable to meet
  • Research the property address online and look for duplicate listings
  • Verify the identity of the landlord and confirm ownership of the property when possible

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a rental scam should report it to their local police department, financial institution and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
