A Sooke cafe and local radio organization have issued apologies after a performer repeatedly used the “N-word” and included misogynistic and violent content during a live concert last month.
The performance took place at Cafe Vosino on August 19th as part of Sooke Radio’s three-part Party on the Patio concert series.
The artist was promoted as B$MITH, also known as Bradley Aaron Tejano-Smith.
The cafe apologized on social media for providing a platform for the performance and accepted responsibility for not adequately vetting the artist beforehand or clearly communicating its expectations for performers using the venue.
Cafe Vosino said the performance did not reflect the organization’s values or the type of community space it is working to provide.
Sooke Radio, which hosted and broadcast the performance, also addressed the incident in a statement.
“During this performance, the artist used words and phrases that could be considered offensive and inflammatory,” the organization wrote.
According to Sooke Radio, organizers spoke with the performer after becoming aware of the language being used and told him it was unacceptable. The artist reportedly agreed to continue the performance without using the language.
“We have learned from this event and in the future will better communicate our expectations for any event,” Sooke Radio said.
“We will also work to ensure that any future events will feature artists who are appropriate for the venue.”
Tejano-Smith later shared Sooke Radio’s statement on his personal Facebook account, writing, “To whom may concern, my sincerest apologies…”
Victoria Buzz attempted to contact Tejano-Smith for further comment. However, messaging was disabled on his Facebook account and no other direct contact information could be located.
The August 19th concert was advertised as the final Party on the Patio performance of the summer at Cafe Vosino.
