One of Victoria’s biggest cultural events returns this September!
The fifth annual South Island Powwow will take place at Royal Athletic Park on Wednesday, September 30th to recognize survivors and their families in the spirit of reconciliation.
The free event starts with gates opening at 10 a.m., the Grand Entry at 12 p.m. and festivities continuing until 7 p.m. that evening.
The Powwow is hosted by the Songhees Nation, with support from the City of Victoria, on the traditional homelands of the lək̓ʷəŋən people.
September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to honouring residential school survivors, their families and those who didn’t return home.
The holiday, introduced in 2021, is a reminder of the lasting impacts of the residential school system. The day is also observed as Orange Shirt Day, with orange shirts recognizing the loss of culture, freedom and self-esteem that many Indigenous children experienced, and a reminder that every child matters.
The South Island Powwow has become one of the most well-attended events of the year in Victoria, bringing thousands to Royal Athletic Park every September.
The Powwow is an opportunity to shop from more than 90 vendors, try some Indigenous cuisine, enjoy performances, guest speakers and live music and celebrate Indigenous culture through song and dance.
