Magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes off northern Vancouver Island

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck off the coast of northern Vancouver Island Thursday afternoon.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the earthquake occurred at approximately 3:19 p.m. on July 16th, around 201 kilometres west of Port Hardy.

The quake was recorded at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres.

Emergency BC said no tsunami is expected following the earthquake.

The seismic activity comes just over two days after a magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded in nearly the same area early Tuesday morning.

That earthquake occurred at approximately 3:58 a.m. on July 14th, also arouund 201 kilometres west of Port Hardy.

There were no immediate reports of damage connected to Thursday’s earthquake and none is expected. Earthquakes Canada had not listed it as felt as of publication.
