A dramatic rollover crash in Colwood was captured on dashcam as a rare thunderstorm brought heavy rain to Greater Victoria last week.

At around 3:28 p.m. on Thursday, July 16th, West Shore RCMP were called to Veterans Memorial Parkway near the Carindale intersection.

Dashcam footage captured a Ford F-150 swerving off the roadway, striking the shoulder and rolling onto its passenger side as weather conditions worsened.

The 36-year-old driver had to be extricated from the truck before being assessed by BC Emergency Health Services for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, responding officers observed signs and symptoms of impairment. The driver provided a breath sample using an Approved Roadside Screening Device, which resulted in a “WARN” reading.

He was issued a three-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and the truck was impounded.

During the investigation, officers also determined the vehicle was uninsured. The driver was ticketed for operating an uninsured vehicle and received an additional 90-day driving prohibition.

“Impaired driving continues to put everyone on our roads at risk and is entirely preventable,” said Corporal Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Officer for West Shore RCMP.

“This collision serves as a reminder that choosing to drive after consuming alcohol can have serious consequences. We encourage everyone to plan ahead and arrange a safe ride home if they have been drinking.”

Police are reminding motorists that impaired driving remains one of the leading contributing factors in serious injury and fatal collisions in BC.

Anyone who suspects a driver is impaired should safely pull over and call 911.
