Victoria non-profits may have an opportunity to improve and preserve their homes with a new one-time grant.
The Community Housing Renewal Grant program was launched by the City of Victoria to support projects that preserve and enhance existing non-market housing in the city.
This grant is intended for non-profit owners or operators of existing non-market, multi-unit buildings that are at least 20 years old. The buildings must not be government-affiliated and must be located in Victoria.
Those eligible can apply for up to 100% of renewal capital costs with a cap of $200,000.
“Healthy communities begin with well-kept, affordable homes,” said Mayor Marianne Alto.
“This investment helps preserve existing homes Victoria residents rely on today while supporting stronger housing for tomorrow. When we invest in community wellbeing, we invest in the future of our city.”
This grant is made possible through the federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund.
Through this fund, a total of $1 million has been made available for projects that improve and preserve existing community housing, increase sustainability and enhance resident wellbeing.
According to the City, the grant checks boxes for city council on both their Housing Strategy and the Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan by increasing use and availability of existing non-market housing.
“With the recent pause in provincial funding for new non-market housing projects, the City saw an opportunity to accelerate the renewal of existing community housing stock,” Mayor Alto added.
Those who are eligible have until 4 p.m. on Friday, July 31st to submit funding applications online.
Once received, City staff will review submissions and evaluate them based on eligibility and quality.
