Thousands expected as Saanich Strawberry Festival returns for its 59th year

One of Greater Victoria’s sweetest summer traditions is set to return next month as the annual Saanich Strawberry Festival celebrates its 59th year.

The free community event takes place on Sunday, July 5th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Beaver Beach in Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park.

There will be live entertainment, family activities, local vendors and of course, plenty of strawberries.

A highlight for many attendees is the festival’s famous strawberry and ice cream serving, featuring locally grown strawberries from Michell’s Farm paired with Island Farms ice cream.

The popular treat will be available from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for just $2 per serving. A limited quantity of Cold Comfort vegan “Nicecream” will also be offered.

Beyond the sweet treats, visitors can enjoy live music and performances throughout the day, browse booths featuring local artisans and community organizations and take part in arts and crafts activities.

New this year, a dedicated kids’ fun zone will offer games and activities led by volunteers from Saanich’s WYLD youth leadership program.

Festival-goers can also pick up an event passport at any Saanich booth and complete activities throughout the day for a chance to win one of five recreation prize packages featuring 10 drop-in passes.

“This is my favourite community event of the year, and the best part is serving up this tasty treat to generations of Saanich families who have attended for many years,” said Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock.

“Strawberry Fest brings people together to make memories, have fun and celebrate local agriculture.”

For the second consecutive year, strawberries and ice cream will be served in reusable metal bowls instead of disposable cups, helping reduce waste. The Sustainable Fox will also be on site to help attendees sort waste and learn more about sustainable practices.

Parking at Beaver Beach is limited, but additional overflow parking will be available along Elk Lake Drive and at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

A free shuttle bus will operate between Saanich Commonwealth Place, the overflow parking area and the festival grounds from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Organizers are also encouraging attendees to cycle or take public transit. Capital Bike’s free bike valet service will be available on-site throughout the event.
