Comox Valley RCMP are warning residents to be on the lookout for dangerous spike devices after multiple reports of metal caltrops being found on roads, trails and private property in the Courtenay area.
According to police, the most recent incident occurred on June 14th when a rider reported finding several caltrops along trails near Powerhouse Road after one punctured the tire of his dirt bike.
RCMP say they have also received reports of the devices being discovered in a residential driveway and on public roadways in Courtenay.
In another incident reported on May 20th, a motorist suffered two flat tires after driving through the Laketrail Road and Marsden Road area, where caltrops were later found lodged in the vehicle’s tires.
While punctured tires can be costly and inconvenient, police say the larger concern is the risk these devices pose to public safety.
Caltrops are metal spike devices designed so that one sharp point is always facing upward when placed on the ground. RCMP note they can puncture the tires of bicycles, motorcycles, vehicles, mobility scooters and emergency vehicles.
Police also warn that the devices pose a serious hazard to pedestrians, children, pets and wildlife, potentially causing significant injuries if stepped on.
“Regardless of who may be using a trail, roadway, or public space, intentionally placing hazardous objects where they may injure people or animals creates an unacceptable risk to the community, and it’s against the law,” said Const. Monika Terragni, media relations officer with the Comox Valley RCMP.
Comox Valley RCMP are asking anyone who discovers spike devices, witnesses suspicious activity, or has information related to these incidents to contact police.
Anyone with information can contact the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321. Anonymous tips can also be provided through Crime Stoppers.
