Sooke RCMP remove 55 impaired drivers from roads so far this year

Sooke RCMP say officers have removed dozens of impaired drivers from local highways and roadways during the first five months of 2026.

According to the detachment, between January 1st and June 1st, officers took 55 impaired drivers off the road through a combination of proactive enforcement efforts and tips from members of the public.

Police said most of those drivers received immediate driving bans, which can result in licence suspensions, fines and vehicle impoundments. Some drivers also face criminal charges.

The reminder comes as summer approaches and more people take to the roads and waterways.

RCMP are also urging boaters to make safe choices on the water, noting that operating a boat while impaired carries the same penalties as impaired driving on the road.

“If you are planning on drinking, please do not drive,” said Staff Sgt. Greg Willcocks, detachment commander of Sooke RCMP.

“Please find a safe ride home so you can help ensure that you, and people sharing the road with you get home safely.”

Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is encouraged to call 911 or contact Sooke RCMP at (250) 642-5241.

How about we just suspend the impaired drivers for 1 year and make them take the bus.No excuse at all for these selfish acts.
