An earthquake that was felt across parts of southern Vancouver Island early Monday morning has been confirmed to pose no tsunami threat to BC.

According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck at approximately 4:10 a.m., about 218 kilometres west of Eugene, Oregon.

Residents across Greater Victoria and other parts of southern Vancouver Island reported feeling light shaking, with some saying it briefly woke them from sleep.

EmergencyInfoBC says the National Tsunami Warning Center has confirmed there is no tsunami threat to BC following the offshore quake.

The initial earthquake was followed by a smaller magnitude 3.9 aftershock roughly 37 minutes later, about 210 kilometres west of Langlois, Oregon.

Emergency officials are reminding anyone who feels an earthquake to drop, cover and hold on until the shaking stops.

If you felt the earthquake, you can report your experience through the US Geological Survey’s “Did You Feel It?” program to help scientists better understand how widely the shaking was experienced.
