The Colwood Garden Society (CGS) has announced that over $100,000 in funding has been secured to build a community garden.
This funding will be used to build a community garden in Colwood Creek Park.
Specifically, CGS secured $98,000 in federal funding, $2,600 from the City of Colwood and $2,500 from the City of Langford.
Once built, CGS will also manage and maintain the garden using the same model they have with the community garden at Colwood City Hall.
Around 120 raised garden beds will be featured at the new community garden, and will include accessible plots designed for those with mobility challenges.
The space will also include a dedicated gathering space where visitors can participate in CGS educational programming, share food and seeds and mingle with fellow gardeners.
“This community garden initiative is a forward-thinking partnership that will transform a seldom-used park space into a resource that supports food security and community wellness without placing additional burden on taxpayers,” said Colwood Mayor Doug Kobayashi.
Colwood Creek Park is perfectly situated to be used as a community garden, as it is already located on agricultural land.
According to CGS, community gardening brings benefits to all involved.
The organization says it contributes to peoples’ health and well-being by creating connections with nature and providing fresh, wholesome and nutritious food. It also increases food security for those who face cost-of-living challenges.
“Community gardens thrive when people come together with a shared purpose, and this project is a perfect example of that,” said Derek de Candole, CGS project lead.
“We’re excited to create a welcoming space where residents can grow food, learn from one another, and build lasting connections.”
Construction on the community garden is planned to start in late 2026.
For those looking to learn more about the project, CGS will be hosting an information and planning meeting on May 14th at 6:30pm in the council chambers at Colwood City Hall.
