Multiple alleged impaired drivers removed from Saanich Peninsula roads over long weekend

Seven drivers had their licences suspended during the May long weekend as police ramped up traffic enforcement across the Saanich Peninsula.

According to the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP, officers were kept busy throughout the holiday weekend responding to a spike in alleged impaired driving incidents in the area.

Police said seven drivers received immediate roadside driving suspensions after allegedly operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Several vehicles were also impounded as part of the enforcement efforts.

In a separate incident, one driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance after officers allegedly seized a quantity of methamphetamine.

Charges are now pending in that case.

The long weekend typically brings increased traffic volumes across the Saanich Peninsula as residents and visitors travel through communities including Sidney and North Saanich, including from BC Ferries.

“Choosing to drive while impaired puts everyone in the community at risk,” the detachment said in a statement Monday.

Police are reminding motorists that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious crashes and fatalities on BC roads.
