Cats take over Fernwood for one purr-fect afternoon later this month

Cat lovers, this one’s for you!

Victoria’s quirky and beloved Fernwood neighbourhood is once again rolling out the red carpet for its feline residents as the second annual Fernwood Cat Walk returns on Saturday, May 30th.

The family-friendly event invites people to wander through Fernwood while meeting dozens of local cats lounging in windows, hanging out in gardens or showing off their neighbourhood swagger from front walkways and porches.

And yes, attendees are encouraged to dress up for the occasion.

Organizers say last year’s event drew around 500 cat enthusiasts and curious visitors, and this year’s Cat Walk is expected to be even bigger, featuring 41 cats spread across 29 different “Cat Stops” throughout the neighbourhood.

The self-guided tour runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., but festivities kick off earlier at 1 p.m. at Little Fernwood, located at 1921 Fernwood Road, where visitors can grab maps, browse vendors and soak in the cat-themed atmosphere before heading out on the route.

Volunteers known as “Cat Herders” will help guide attendees through the neighbourhood and keep things running smoothly while also helping visitors follow proper Cat Walk etiquette.

New this year is a “Vote for the Best Cat Stop” fundraiser, where attendees can scan QR codes at each stop and vote for their favourites for $2 per vote.

Proceeds will support the Victoria Humane Society, which will also be onsite with adoptable kittens.

The event’s vendor market will include local artists, businesses, veterinarians and community groups, along with raffle prizes donated by local businesses.

For those looking to double up on the fun, the Cat Walk also coincides with the Fernwood Art Stroll, meaning attendees can take in local art displays while hunting for some of the neighbourhood’s most photogenic felines.

Organizers say some stops will even feature both artists and cats together.

The event is free to attend.
