Good news for BC Transit riders!
BC Transit and the Victoria Regional Transit Commission announced this week that there will be free bus services in Victoria on Wednesday, June 3rd.
The free service is intended to offer an environmentally friendly transportation option on Clean Air Day.
Clean Air Day, established in 1999 by the Government of Canada as a part of Canadian Environment Week, is an opportunity to raise awareness about air quality and climate change.
In honour of the occasion, transit will be free all day for riders in the Victoria region, including handyDART users.
This day of free transit for all riders also lands within GoByBike Week, for which BC Transit is offering free rides to all cyclists. From Saturday, May 30th to Friday, June 5th, cyclists can ride Victoria buses for free if they bring their bike, or have their bike helmet on them.
“Shifting to more environmentally sustainable modes of transportation, such as transit, drastically reduces the number of single occupant vehicles on the road, reduces traffic, and helps achieve an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants in support the Province of BC’s CleanBC Plan,” BC Transit said in a release.
BC Transit is currently in the process of delivering Phase One of its Electric Bus Project, which will see 125 electric buses deployed across eight transit systems, including Victoria, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Nelson, Powell River, the Sunshine Coast and Whistler.
The company is also hoping to procure heavy-duty hybrid buses and provide more communities with environmentally-friendly alternatives to single occupant vehicles.
