Two separate searches for missing youth on Vancouver Island ended safely this weekend, thanks to a coordinated effort by local search and rescue crews.
Comox Valley Search and Rescue responded to two calls on Friday and Saturday involving young people reported missing in Courtenay and Union Bay.
On Friday afternoon and into the evening, crews were called to assist in the search for two 10-year-old boys who had left their home in Courtenay.
Searchers canvassed nearby parks, schools and common travel routes in the area. The boys were located not far from home and were safely returned to their family.
The following afternoon, teams were deployed to Union Bay to help search for a missing 12-year-old.
Based on likely travel routes, searchers were sent into key areas while mutual aid support was provided by Campbell River Search and Rescue and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue.
The youth was found later that evening and reunited with family.
In a statement shared over the weekend, search and rescue officials expressed gratitude to the volunteers and partner agencies who responded, as well as to the families and loved ones who support their work.
