Popular Vic West store expanding into Victoria’s former Hudson’s Bay space

Share

A well-known Vic West grocer appears to be setting up shop in downtown Victoria.

The operators behind Market Garden on Catherine Street shared a teaser on social media hinting at a new boutique retail venture opening inside the Bay Centre.

The space was once home to the Hudson’s Bay, which left behind several large units when it closed last year.

The new shop will be called Sabayons, a name that nods to the former Saba building and the Eaton’s and Bay stores that once occupied the same Fort and Government corner.

A video posted to social media shows new signage already going up. It is not yet clear whether the business will occupy all levels previously held by the Hudson’s Bay.

Market Garden has built a loyal following for its mix of international products, local ingredients and unique packaged goods.

The downtown location is expected to lean into the same curated style, though full details have not yet been released.

Victoria Buzz has reached out to both the Bay Centre and Market Garden and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
