Iconic ‘Captain Canuck’ comic book artist visiting Vancouver Island for signings

A rare opportunity is coming to the island for comic book fans!

Next week, the talented artist and writer behind the iconic Captain Canuck comic book series will be on Vancouver Island for two book signings in honour of the Canadian superhero series’ 50th anniversary.

At these book signings, fans will be able to buy a comic featuring the hero battling his latest adversary, US President Donald Trump.

Richard Comely created Captain Canuck while living in Winnipeg in 1975. Since then, the Captain has become an enduring and popular heroic symbol for all Canadians.

Captain Canuck has sold over four million comics and books to date.

Because of the hero’s popularity, the Captain was often honoured through other means at the behest of the federal government.

Some examples of this are that this year also marks the 30th Anniversary of the Captain Canuck postage stamp issued in 1995, and the Royal Canadian Mint released a Captain Canuck $20 silver coin in 2018.

The commemorative coin reportedly sold out on the day of its release.

According to the artist behind Captain Canuck, an ironic fact about the comic, but a heartwarming one, is that 80% of the comic book’s sales happen in the United States.

With recent annexation threats and tariffs imposed by Trump, Comely says that many Canadians have turned once more to their crusader for inspiration and courage to push on.

More fun facts about Captain Canuck is that this Winnipeg-made comic series was the world’s first independent, full-colour superhero comic book series and that the Captain once donned the cover of Time magazine in 1997.

The Canadian superhero has also been featured in CBC, The Los Angeles Times, Toronto Star, The National Post, The Globe & Mail, Winnipeg Tribune, Sudbury Star, Walrus, and many other news outlets, including Victoria Buzz.

Next week, Comely will be signing Captain Canuck comics at Curious Comics in Nanaimo on Wednesday, November 26th, and in Langford on Friday, November 28th.

At these signings, fans will be able to purchase a “Captain Canada versus Donald Trump” variant cover comic.
